St Teresa's Catholic Primary School

French @ St. Teresa's

At St Teresa’s we follow a high-quality foreign languages curriculum using the Language Angels scheme of work and resources, supplemented by resources and ideas from Lightbulb Languages. These schemes progressively develop pupils’ knowledge and skills in foreign languages through the delivery of well-planned weekly lessons (45 minutes) in Key Stage 2. These lessons will be taught by our language specialist.

Units, where possible and appropriate, will be linked to class topics and cross curricular themes. Children will build on previous knowledge gradually as their foreign language lessons continue to recycle, revise and consolidate previously learnt language whilst building on all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Knowledge and awareness of required and appropriate grammar concepts will be taught throughout all units
at all levels of challenge.

Each class in each year group will have an overview of units to be taught during the academic year to ensure substantial progress and learning is achieved.

At St Teresa’s, celebrating language and the cultural diversity of our school is an important part of the children’s intercultural experience. There are also opportunities to celebrate and explore language and culture through learning prayers in French, Foreign language celebration assemblies, cookery sessions of traditional French food, Festivals, Armistice Day and Saint Days as well as weather forecasts based on French speaking countries.
